Jemison (YR)

Welcome to Jemison class

Our class is a team - we are explorers, educators, leaders and learners of the 21st century!

We are the explorers! We aim to ignite a sense of discovery as children experience scientific, engineering and mathematical skills in their play. We deliver an integrated approach to learning, encouraging children’s critical thinking, curiosity, enthusiasm for learning and building their capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive.

Our class is named after Mae Jemison, an American engineer, physician and former NASA astronaut. She became the first black woman to explore space when she served on board the Space Shuttle Endeavour.

Jemison Class is one of our two Reception classes.

Mrs Capehorn is the teacher, supported each day by Mrs Emmett.

Our wider EYFS team includes Mrs Sparks and Mrs Fox. All of the EYFS adults work closely together and know the children in both Jemison and Shackleton classes well.

Mrs Emmett

Teaching Assistant

We hope you are all looking forward to a happy and productive year where your children develop as happy and independent learners.

The children start their day between 8.35am-8.45am and end their day at 3.15pm. Please ensure they are dropped off and collected at these times.

Phonics and Reading

We teach Phonics using Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised which is a complete systematic synthetic phonics programme. Each day in your child’s Phonic lesson they will be introduced to a new phoneme as well as revise previously taught phonemes. They will then be encouraged to recognise and use these phonemes in their reading and writing.
Please see the pronunciation video's below on how to support your child at home.
Your child will be bringing home reading books that contain taught phonemes to ensure that this new learning becomes fully embedded.
We are passionate about reading at Nansledan. The children learn the important skills needed to read when they are in school, but becoming a reader takes a lot of practise. Please support your child's development as a reader by listening to them read at least 4 times a week.

Tapestry
This will be an important form of communication, where we share observations of your child’s learning and keep you informed of important information. We would love it if you could log on regularly and let us know about your child’s development at home.

Snack
Free fruit and milk will be given daily.

P.E
Please ensure your child has their P.E kit in school every day. Most parents choose to leave it on their child’s coat peg, it will then be sent home at the end of every half term. It is important that all P.E clothing is clearly labelled with your child’s name, including trainers/plimsolls.

Please also ensure that water bottles, packed lunch boxes, coats and school uniform are also clearly labelled.

Outdoor Learning

Please provide a wet weather suit and pair of wellington boots (which stay at school) for your child so they can access the curriculum in the outside area in wet weather. Please write your child’s name clearly on these.
