Nansledan curriculum

Our STEAM curriculum is a theme based and  integrated approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding pupil enquiry, dialogue and critical thinking.

Nansledan School's STEAM curriculum is broad and balanced and built around the principles of active discovery and experiential learning.  It is broken down into four main stages which reflect the key stages of the National Curriculum, but encompass the STEAM theme as an organising principle.

The four key stages are:

  • Explorers: Early Years Foundation Stage
  • Discoverers: KS1/Y1 & Y2
  • Innovators: Lower KS2/Y3 & Y4
  • Pioneers: Upper KS2/Y5 & Y6

In every year group the curriculum consists of theme-based approaches to learning that are firmly rooted upon progressive teaching of skills and are knowledge rich.  Children enjoy  relevant and ambitious experiences delivered in an unreserved spirit of adventure.

The curriculum content has been carefully chosen and is organised in a coherent way, ensuring children can build on their knowledge from year to year.

We have strong values, developing in every child the skills to be responsible, ambitious, active learners who are great communicators and respectful global citizens.

We help our pupils build independence, character, resilience, leadership skills and a love of learning.

We want to give our children cultural capital on which to build, so every child, regardless of race, gender, socio -economic background or ability, partakes in experiences which will enable them to take a lead role in society in later life.

Through the deliberate nurturing of intellectual curiosity, self-reliance, tenacity of purpose, and commitment to others, our children will develop as independent life-long learners, creative risk-takers and innovators. We want our pupils to be resilient, bold and to have the skills and virtues that will enable them to be leaders in their chosen fields as adults.

The STEAM Curriculum will be guided by the philosophy:

“Aut viam inveniam aut faciam”

I will either find a way or make one

We believe that through the deliberate nurturing of intellectual curiosity, self-reliance, tenacity of purpose, and commitment to others, our pupils will make a difference in a complex and changing world.

Curriculum Virtues & Values

Nansledan School aims to ensure all pupils achieve their potential in all dimensions of their life — spiritual, moral, cognitive, emotional, imaginative, aesthetic, social and physical: intelligence plus character.

We want our pupils to develop a determined, independent spirit, taking responsibility for themselves, their relationships with others, and the world around them.  We believe that through the deliberate nurturing of intellectual curiosity, self-reliance, tenacity of purpose, and commitment to others, our pupils will make a difference in a complex and changing world.

At all times the STEAM Curriculum promotes informed awareness, tolerance and respect for diversity in both the school and the community. An example of this is through the naming of our classes, reflecting inspirational individuals from diverse backgrounds.

We ensure explicit celebration and teaching of diversity of cultural, religious, social, environmental and ethnic backgrounds to foster citizens of a global community and promote equality and justice.

Our teachers deliver and  exciting range of activities to nurture integrity, independence and self-control, inspire pride and develop leadership and inter-personal skills. Our pupils contribute fully to the life of the school, both in the classroom and beyond, with high standards of behavior expected at all times.
