Music at Nansledan
At our school, music is taught as a dedicated subject from Early Years through to Year 6, with links made to other areas of learning when appropriateāsuch as topic work or class projects.
We follow the Sing Up Music Scheme to deliver a rich, progressive curriculum that helps children develop key musical skills including singing, listening, performing, composing, and playing instruments. All children receive at least one weekly music lesson, and lessons are designed to be enjoyable, inclusive, and educational for all learners.
Children explore a wide range of musical styles, traditions, and instruments during their time at school. Instruments they will use include:
- Percussion instruments (e.g. drums, tambourines, claves)
- Ukulele
- Recorder
- Glockenspiel
In addition to curriculum lessons, we provide regular opportunities for whole-school singing through collective worship, as well as extra-curricular opportunities such as choir, vocal lessons from peripatetic teachers, and cross-curricular music activities.
Inclusivity and SEND Support in Music
Music is a subject where all children can thrive. Our music curriculum is carefully adapted to ensure all pupils, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), can access learning and fully participate. We use a range of strategies such as:
- Multi-sensory approaches to support different learning styles
- Visual prompts and simplified instructions to aid understanding
- Accessible instruments and resources for physical or sensory needs
- Opportunities for repetition and overlearning to build confidence
Music provides a powerful means of communication, expression, and emotional regulation, which is especially valuable for children with SEND. It helps build self-esteem, focus, memory, coordination, and promotes a strong sense of belonging and achievement.
Music in Our Community
Music plays an important role in our wider school life. We use it to promote the Fundamental British Values, support childrenās well-being, and bring our school community together through performances, celebrations, and events that engage both parents/carers and the wider community.
