🌊 Rooted in Cornwall, Connected to the World
At Nansledan School, we believe Geography helps children make sense of the world around them and understand their place within it. Living in Cornwall gives our children a unique opportunity to learn from the rich landscapes on their doorstep, from our beautiful coastline and beaches to our countryside, towns and communities.
Through Geography, children develop a sense of belonging to their local area while building curiosity about the wider world. We encourage them to explore, question and discover how people, places and environments are connected, inspiring a lifelong fascination with our planet and the people who share it.
Our carefully planned curriculum ensures full coverage of the National Curriculum while making meaningful links across our wider STEAM curriculum. Along the way, children develop important skills such as critical thinking, communication, problem-solving and environmental responsibility.
🌍 From Cornwall's Coast to the Corners of the World
Our geographical journey begins in EYFS through Understanding the World, where children explore their local environment, communities and the natural world through play, storytelling and first-hand experiences.
As children move through Key Stage 1, they begin to explore Nansledan, Cornwall, the United Kingdom and the wider world. They learn to use maps, develop geographical vocabulary and start to understand how places are similar and different.
In Lower Key Stage 2, children broaden their horizons through the study of continents, climate zones, rivers, rainforests and diverse regions around the world. They begin to ask more complex geographical questions and explore how physical and human processes shape the places we live.
By Upper Key Stage 2, children are confident geographers who investigate real-world issues such as natural disasters, sustainability, settlement and environmental change. Through fieldwork, research and enquiry, they learn to think critically about both local and global challenges.
Throughout their time at Nansledan, children revisit and build upon prior learning, developing deeper knowledge, stronger skills and a greater appreciation of the world around them.
🧭 Curious Minds, Confident Explorers
Our Geography curriculum is built around engaging enquiry questions that encourage children to investigate, discuss and think deeply about the world around them.
Learning develops progressively through the four key strands of the National Curriculum:
- Locational Knowledge
- Place Knowledge
- Human and Physical Geography
- Geographical Skills and Fieldwork
Children regularly apply their learning through:
- Local area studies and fieldwork
- Map reading and navigation
- Atlases, globes and digital mapping
- Comparing places and cultures
- Investigating environmental issues and possible solutions
By comparing Cornwall with places across the United Kingdom and the wider world, children develop a deeper understanding of diversity, interconnectedness and the importance of caring for our environment.
⭐ Growing Tomorrow's Global Citizens
Our vision is for every child to leave Nansledan with a love of learning about the world, a strong connection to Cornwall and an appreciation of the people, places and environments that make our planet unique.
We want our children to be confident, curious and compassionate individuals who understand their role in shaping the future. Through Geography, they learn to respect different cultures, value their local community and recognise the importance of protecting the world for generations to come.
