Nansledan School

Newton Class Y1

WELCOME TO NEWTON CLASS

Our class is a team - we are discoverers, educators, leaders and learners of the 21st century!
We have two classes of Y1 pupils and Newton Class is one of them.

We are part of the Discoverers Stage, working closely with the rest of Year One and Year Two across Key Stage 1. All of the Year One adults work closely together and know the children in both Newton and Fleming classes well. We also encourage the children to play, work and learn together across the two Y1 classes.

Our class is named after Sir Isaac Newton, the famous mathematician and physicist and recognised to be one of the greatest scientific discoverers of all time.

Mrs Keill

Class Teacher

I am Mrs Keill and I am the class teacher in Newton class. I am looking forward to working with Mrs Oswick and Mrs Reskelly. We will work closely together; we are lucky to have such a great year 1 team. We have so many fun learning activities and experiences planned for this year. Here are a few facts about me: Favourite colour: Pink Favourite animal: Dogs – I have a very naughty Miniature Schnauzer called Pippi. Favourite beach: Porth beach Favourite book: Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren– my dog Pippi is named after her! Favourite food: Street food, it is always so delicious. Interesting fact about me: I was born and grew up in Germany, as I am a military child. My dad is Dutch and I spent most of my childhood in Holland. I love everything about Holland, it is a wonderful, welcoming country.

Teaching Assistant

In Year 1, a healthy morning snack of fruit or vegetables is provided to every child daily.
English
This term, we will be basing our writing on the story of Golidlocks and the Three Bears and other traditional tales. We will be working hard in ensuring our pencil grip and fine motor skills are strong with correct letter formation. The children will use the stories to practice segmenting to write simple lists and captions.  We will develop our non-fiction writing skills with instructional writing based upon our porridge making.
Reading
We teach reading through Little Wandle. We continue to develop our reading skills, including decoding, prosody and comprehension. We encourage a love of reading through engaging in a range of different book types and genres. We need your support with this and ask you to read 5 times a week and record this in your child's reading record. The number of home reads will go towards moving up the Reading Rockets rewards in class. Please ensure your child's book and reading record are in school every day.
Your child's Little Wandle reading book will be changed every Monday.

Maths
In maths, we begin to develop our understanding of place value with a focus on sorting, recognising, counting and comparing numbers and objects to 10.

Continuous Learning
Within Year 1 we follow a Continuous Provision alongside our whole class and group teaching. The children will have a main lesson input as a whole class and then complete their independent work with an adult in a small, focused group.  They are then able to access activities within the classroom or outside alongside this learning which will further their understanding of topics.
